It is widely recognised that it is ideal to work with a document in the original language in which it was written. ScriptureDirect enables the users to work directly with the Greek New Testament text whether they have a knowledge of Greek or not. It is not even necessary to know the Greek alphabet. This is made possible by the following functions: Interlinear Greek/English translation ScriptureDirect has divided the New Testament into lines and painstakingly translated it to show the relationship between every Greek word and its English equivalent. This is not a printed book imported into electronic format, but an interlinear function that has been specifically designed to allow the user to interact dynamically with it. This state of the art feature is protected by pending patent applications.
Greek meaning for the context ScriptureDirect uses the Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament based on Semantic Domains by Louw & Nida, published by the United Bible Societies. This state of the art dictionary lists all the possible meanings that are found in the New Testament and describes each one. These meanings have been grouped together in 93 meaning categories or semantic domains. Each one of these semantic domains has been divided into subdomains (this explains the numbers associated with each meaning, eg 33.98 in number 2 in the screenshot below). ScriptureDirect incorporates this dictionary and adds value by selecting the most likely meaning for each New Testament Greek word in its specific context. This makes it possible for the user to think in terms of meaning and to see words as references to meanings. For example, if one only searches the Bible for occurrences of a specific Greek word, and that word has more than one possible meaning, then the search is not meaning sensitive and brings up references that are not related in meaning. The outcome is inaccurate in terms of meaning. In contrast, with ScriptureDirect one can search the New Testament for the occurrences of a specifically selected meaning of any Greek word. The results are accurate and precise. ScriptureDirect shows all possible meanings for each Greek word in the New Testament. The most likely meaning in the context has been marked. Each possible meaning is easy to view and the user can evaluate the translators' choice of the most likely meaning in the context. 1. If you move your mouse over or click any English or Greek word, the link between the two languages is clearly shown. 2. All the possible meanings for the clicked Greek word are shown. The recommended meaning for the context is underlined. If you click on any of the meanings the description appears on the right hand side. 3. The Louw Nida dictionary has been reformatted by ScriptureDirect to present the Meaning, Translation Words and Examples clearly. Further translation words and examples have been added by Prof Johannes Louw.
